To Black Detroit, With Love
"To Black Detroit, With Love" was born out of my admiration of Detroit. Throughout the exhibit I used photography and collages to tell this story. Drawing from personal experiences and a deep connection to the city, I delved into the classic narratives and everyday realities that define the Black Detroit experience.
I grew up just steps away from my grandfather's house, a symbol of generational continuity in the heart of Detroit on 8 mile. I have loved the city my whole life. After graduating from Wayne State University and immersing myself in the downtown scene, I embarked on a journey that took me across the country and around the world. Yet, through my travels it was cemented in my spirit that there is truly no place like Detroit.
In "To Black Detroit, With Love" I refuse to let Detroit's ever-changing landscape overshadow what I know to be true. Detroit is Black and will always be! Through my art, I invite viewers to join me on a journey through Detroits past, present, and future. I invite them to celebrate the resilience, creativity, and enduring spirit of Black Detroit.
"To Black Detroit, With Love" is not just an art show—it's a testament to the power of storytelling and the importance of honoring our collective heritage.
